Christmas Granny

It is the festive season and many are enjoying their holidays, might be a good idea to sit down by the fire on a cold, rainy or snowy evening and crochet this cute granny square coaster.

Difficulty level: Beginner

You will need:

-Excel EX991 in off-white, green and red

-4.0mm (US G/6, UK 8) crochet hook

-Tapestry needle

-Scissors

Finished size:

Squares are approx. 5x5 inches

Abbreviations (US):

st(s) stitch(es) sp(s) space(s) ch chain ch-sp chain space ss slip stitch

sc single crochet dc double crochet

sk skip Magic ring

We'll start with a basic granny square, the distribution of colours is what gives it character, then most of the work is done at the boarders.

Round 1:

Start with off-white.

Magic circle, ch 3, 2 dc, ch2, *3 dc, ch 2* 3 times, Join on top of ch 3 with a ss.

Round 2:

Ss in the next 2 sts and in the ch-2-sp, then in the same ch-2-sp ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, *3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the next ch-2-sp* 3 times. Join on top of ch 3 with a ss and fasten off yarn.

Round 3:

Join in new colour (red) in any ch-2-sp.

Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the same ch-2-sp. *3 dc in the next space, then dc 3, ch 2, dc 3 in the next ch-2-sp* repeat 3 times. Join on top of ch 3 with a ss.

Round 4:

Ss in the next 2 sts and in the next ch-2-sp, ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the same ch-2-sp. *3 dc in the next 3 sps each, then dc 3, ch 2, dc 3 in the next ch-2-sp* repeat 3 times, then 3 dc in the next 3 spaces each. Join on top of ch 3 with a ss and fasten off yarn.

Round 5:

Join in new colour (green) in any ch-2-sp.

Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the same ch-2-sp. *3 dc in the next 3 sps each, then dc 3, ch 2, dc 3 in the next ch-2-sp* repeat 3 times, then 3 dc in the next 3 spaces each. Join on top of ch 3 with a ss.

Round 6:

SS in the next 2 sts and in the ch-2-sp. Ch 3, 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in the same ch-2-sp. *3 dc in the next 4 sps each, then dc 3, ch 2, dc 3 in the next ch-2-sp* repeat 3 times, then 3 dc in the next 4 spaces each. Join on top of ch 3 with a ss and fasten off yarn.

Round 7:

Join in the new yarn (off-white) in any st other than the ch-2-sp.

Ch 1, sc in the same st, sc in every st around. and crochet 5 sc in each ch-2-sp around. Join wth a ss to ch1 and close round with a ss.

Round 8:

Ch1, then sc in the same st, sc around until you are 2 sts away from the ch-s-sp then: *sc, ch 5, sc all in the same st, repeat 5 times. Then, sc in the next sts until again you are 2 sts away from the ch-2-sp* Then repeat from * around. Close round at ch 1 with a ss and fasten off yarn.
